Bernard J. Farber has served as Editor of the AELE monthly publications Liability Reporter and Jail & Prisoner Law Bulletin since 1987, and of the Fire, Police, & Corrections Personnel Reporter since July of 2011.. He also writes/edits the police civil liability and corrections law sections of the Monthly Law Journal since 2007, as well as the discipline and employment law section of that journal since July of 2011. He is the webmaster of the AELE website at http://www.aele.org (November 1997 to present).
Farber served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he has taught since 1983, full-time from 1983-1986, and part-time from 1987-2013. He is the co-author of three books, Nedrud's Illinois Law of Criminal Investigation, Second Edition (1986, with James P. Manak), The Dow Jones-Irwin Handbook of Microcomputer Applications in Law (1987, with Ronald Staudt), and Protective Security Law, Second Edition (1996, with Fred Inbau and David Arnold). He is also the author of a correspondence course on Deadly Force and the Police Officer (a seven pamphlet series, published by the Northwestern University Traffic Institute 1986). He also revised Chapter 2 of the Sixth Edition of Inbau, Thompson, Zagel & Manak, Criminal Law & Its Administration (Foundation Press 1996). He has authored or co-authored articles in the Illinois Police Association Official Journal, The Prosecutor (magazine of the National District Attorneys' Association), the American Bar Association Journal, and The Police Chief.
Farber has done police training for the Northwestern University Traffic Institute (including classes in Evanston, Illinois, Topeka, Kansas, and Little Rock, Arkansas), and made presentations at continuing legal education courses or sessions under the auspices of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, the Oklahoma and Kansas prosecutors' associations, the Chicago Bar Association Police/Lawyer Relations Committee, John Marshall Law School, the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association, and at the 22nd Annual DUI/Vehicular Homicide Conference.
Farber received his J.D. with high honors from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1983, and his B.S. from the University of the State of New York in 1978. He served as Editor-in Chief of the Chicago-Kent Law Review in the 1982-83 academic year. He was licensed to practice law in Illinois in 1983 and admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1987. From1998 to 2009, he served as an Arbitrator in the Circuit Court of Cook County (Municipal District 1) Mandatory Arbitration Program.
He was listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America (1996-2007, 2012-2014, and 2016 editions) in Marquis Who’s Who in American Law (1989, 1991, 1993, 1996, 1998-1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007 editions), and was an Inductee into the Who’s Who Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement award (2018).
