New York court holds
state has compelling interest in preventing suicide of people in its care
and custody. Martin H. Von Holden v. Mark David Chapman, 450 N.Y.S.2d 623
(App. 1982).
West Virginia
holds state's interest in preserving prisoner's life is superior to the
prisoner's right to personal privacy; holds incarcerated persons have modified
constitutional rights. State ex rel White v. Narick, 292 S.E.2d 54 (W.
Va. 1982).
Georgia Supreme
Court rules that prison officials may not force feed prisoner on hunger
strike who will die if not fed. Zant v. Prevatte, 286 S.E.2d 715 (Ga. 1982).
