$12 million settlement in lawsuits over 1971 Attica prison riot, including
$8 million in damages to inmates and $4 million in attorneys' fees. Blyden

Federal appeals court overturns $4 million jury award to former Attica
inmate riot participant against deputy warden for allegedly allowing reprisals
against inmates after retaking of prison; appeals court also overturns
liability verdict returned by separate jury in earlier phase of the case.

in class action lawsuit brought by prisoners, claiming that prison officials
failed to protect them from violence by other prisoners during prison riot,
includes establishment of $4.1 million settlement fund; court awards $1.4

Jury awards $4 million to former Attica inmate riot participant against
deputy warden for allegedly allowing reprisals against inmates after retaking
of prison in first of 1,281 trials on individual prisoner damage claims.

Jury in Attica
riot lawsuit finds deputy warden liable for allegedly allowing reprisals
against inmates after retaking of prison; jury deadlocks over liability
of two other defendants. Al-Jundi v. Mancusi, U.S. Dist. Ct. Buffalo, N.Y.,
reported in the New York Times, National Edition, p. A16 (Feb. 5, 1992).
Prison officials
entitled to qualified immunity from liability for the retaking of Attica
prison after prison riot, except for claims relating to medical care, but
were not entitled to such immunity against claims that they condoned reprisals
against inmates after prison was recaptured. Al-Jundi v. Mancusi, 926 F.2d
235 (2nd Cir. 1991).
